How far ahead should I book?
You should book ahead as soon as possible. You can reserve with a credit card at no charge, until you actually rent the unit. This also guarantees your rate, and protects you against price increases.
U-Haul specializes in one way rentals so they cannot guarantee that the truck you need will be at the dealership where you arranged the rental. You may have to travel to a location close by where the truck is and your reservation is transferred there. Typically the earlier you book the less you will have to travel to pick up your truck.
What size of truck do I need?
- 4 Bedrooms +
- 2-3 Bedrooms
- 1-2 Bedrooms
- Studio or less
Do I need a special license to drive a U-Haul truck?
Most trucks are automatic transmission. None of the trucks have air brakes, so no special license is required. Even if you haven't driven a truck you'll find they're relatively easy to drive.
What kind of gas mileage should I expect?
Some customers have indicated that the newer trucks are getting upwards of 12 mpg
What about renting a trailer?
Yes, U-haul rents trailers. Common sizes are as follows:
- 6X12 tandem axle: is approximately 2/3 size of the 14ft truck. The door opening will accommodate a queen size bed. You will need a V8 powered truck or SUV to tow
- 5X8 single axle: smaller than 6X12 but door opening is still large enough for queen size bed. Can be towed with med size car
- 4X8 single axle: for small loads to be pulled by a smaller car
- Ramp trailers: open trailers ideal for motorcycles or ATVs
What size ball do I need?
The trailer hitch ball on your vehicle needs to be 2 inch.
What kind of electrical hook-up will I need?
A four way flat is the easiest, but we usually have adapters for the other types
Do I need electric brakes?
No. The larger trailers have surge brakes, and the smaller ones don't need more than what your car already has.
Is there a drop-off fee?
No. All trucks and trailers can be rented from point a to point b. Mileage is included
Can I rent round trip?
Yes, but trucks rented round trip will have no set mileage and mileage is usually charged out at .79 per kilometer.
Who sets the rates?
Rates are set by U-Haul, not the individual dealer.
What about towing a car?
You can use a Tow Dolly
It has two wheels and a ramp to keep the front wheels of your car up off the pavement. Cars towed in this manner must have valid insurance.
You can use an Auto Transport
It is a tandem axle trailer you drive your car up into. The car
does not need valid insurance.
Either of these trailers can be towed behind your U-Haul truck. If you want to tow an Auto Transport behind your own truck, it needs to be at least V8 powered full size pick up or larger SUV
What will a car trailer carry?
Car trailers are designed to transport cars. It may be possible to carry an import style pick up, but not a full size pick up truck.
Are U-Haul trucks safe?
We typically check all vehicles that come into our rental agency. We are also a licensed motor vehicle inspection facility. We are usually given authorization to perform necessary repairs. So vehicles leaving this site are in good shape, despite what you may have heard to the contrary. However it goes without saying, that no one can foresee all possible reasons why a unit might fail.
